17th Annual James Cup Review

The 17th Annual James Cup was held on Sunday, February 16th at ISCC

Over 100 players from Simsbury, Avon, South Windsor and Northern Lights participated in the event

The James Cup honors the memory of James Stover, who was a SYHA Mite House player in 2003 when he passed away in a tragic accident.  James's zest for life and happy attitude are celebrated in this "just for fun" tournament, where no scores are kept and everybody gets in on the action on the ice.

Simsbury player James McCann was awarded the Gary Loftus Award.  This award, given in memory of a hockey parent extraordinaire, recognizes a player's willingness to work hard while maintaining a positive attitude and exemplary sportsmanship.  Congratulations James!  Way to make SYHA Proud!

Entry fees and donations from the James Cup benefit the SYHA James A. Stover Scholarship Fund.  Click here to learn more about this scholarship, which provides funds to enable players to participate in Simsbury Youth Hockey, regardless of financial ability.

Thank you to all participants and volunteers!

2020-21 Board Nominations

Dear SYHA Members,

I would like to introduce our Nominating Committee for the 2020-21 Simsbury Youth Hockey Association Board of Directors.   , , and I will be working on filling the open board member positions for the upcoming season.  The nominees will be presented to the current SYHA Board on March 10th for their approval.

An additional goal of the committee will be to look long term on succession in future years.  The Simsbury Youth Hockey Association has been an organization built on volunteer involvement since 1971.  That tradition continues and we ask that if you have an interest in getting more involved with SYHA, please reach out to any of the committee members by Friday, February 28th.

Please join the SYHA Board in saying Thank You to the following who have served our organization and will be stepping down at the end of this session, March 30th.  Their time, commitment, and services are greatly appreciated.

  • Jim Cramer
  • Ann Prokop
  • Julie Puzzo
  • Tom Vincent

In the 2020-21 season, we have the following Board and Committee roles that need to be filled:

  1. Assistant Registrar (Succession Planning Role) - Assist the Registrar with submitting completed team rosters to the Connecticut Hockey Conference before the start of the season, ensuring that all SYHA players and coaches are properly registered with both SYHA and USA Hockey.  It is expected that this person will assume all Registrar responsibilities in the 2021-22 season.
  2. Assistant Master Scheduler (Succession Planning Role) - Assist the Master Scheduler with scheduling all practice and game times, as well as coordinate game officials, for all teams / divisions.  It is expected that this person will assume all Master Scheduler responsibilities in the 2021-22 season.
  3. PeeWee (U12) and Bantam (U14) Travel Director (2 positions) - Work with at-large scheduler, Named Coach, and Director of Coaching to coordinate Division tryouts and manage the logistics of the tryout process.  The Division Director will schedule and manage game schedules on the CHC website, as well as act as the point of contact and liaison for their Division.
  4. Committee Positions - Golf Tournament, Winter Classic, Holiday Tournament, and Fundraising positions needed!

Thanks in advance for your consideration to support SYHA!    If you have any questions or would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please reach out to any Nominating Committee Member by Friday, February 28th.

Sincerely,

Tom Humphreys
2020-21 Nominating Committee Chair

2020 Girls High School Team (Split Season) Registration is OPEN

Fall 2020 Simsbury Girls High School Team (Split Season) Registration is OPEN

Registration required by March 20th!

We are happy to announce Jim McCormick as Head Coach and Tom Humphreys as Assistant Coach of the 2020 Girls HS Team.

The Girls High School Team registration is open to experienced players entering 9th through 12th Grade in the 2020-21 School Year.  Once again this season, the focus of the team is high school preparation.  The season will start in late August and the team will compete in the Connecticut Girls Hockey League (CGHL).  This split season team will hold one weeknight practice and one or two weekend games each week through Thanksgiving.  They will also participate in the end of season CGHL state tournament.

An ideal program for any athlete who participates in a Fall sport, but wants to play hockey to prepare for the winter season!

We must confirm interest as soon as possible to appropriately plan for the coming season and ensure that all girls have the opportunity to confirm their team placement before April 1st.  Please note this program is open to players from all towns / high schools.  Should there be enough interest / waitlist registrations, SYHA will field a second team and a tryout may be held (TBD).

Practice player (practice only) opportunities also available for a reduced season fee.

To register for the Fall 2020 Girls High School Team by March 20th, please click HERE

A $200 commitment fee is required at the time of registration.  By the close of registration on 3/20, all registrants will receive confirmation of our ability to field a team in the 2020-21 season.  Your $200 registration fee will be applied to your 2020-21 tuition, or will be refunded only in the event that SYHA does not have enough interest to field a team.
